A/B Test Your AI Voice Greetings with Custom Welcome Messages

The first few seconds of a phone call shape everything that follows. Yonder’s AI Voice Agent now lets you create multiple welcome greetings, run them simultaneously, and use real call data to find out which one drives the most engagement.

It’s A/B testing for your voice channel, built directly into the platform.

What are custom welcome messages?

A welcome message is the greeting callers hear when the Yonder AI Voice Agent picks up. Previously, operators configured a single welcome message. Now you can create several, and Yonder randomly rotates between them across incoming calls.

As calls accumulate, Yonder tracks which greeting was used for each call and reports on engagement metrics for each one. Over time, you build a clear picture of which opening your guests respond to best.

How to set up custom welcome messages:

You’ll find welcome message settings on the Voice Setup page in your Yonder dashboard. Here’s how it works:

  • Add welcome messages: write each greeting as you’d want it spoken by the Voice Agent
  • Enable or disable messages: only enabled messages are used on live calls
  • Let data collect: Yonder logs which greeting was used for every call and tracks engagement per message
  • Review results: a new Reports tab shows engagement metrics for each greeting once you have enough data
  • Act on the results: disable underperforming greetings and create new variations to keep testing

Note: welcome messages cannot be edited once created. Because Yonder ties reporting data to the exact wording of each message, any edit would make historical comparisons unreliable. To change a greeting, delete it and create a new one.

Tips for getting statistically meaningful results

  • Start with 3–4 variations
Three or four welcome messages is the right starting point. Too few limits comparison data; too many means it takes longer to accumulate enough calls per greeting to draw reliable conclusions.

  • Test one variable at a time
Change one element between variations: tone (warm vs. formal), structure (open question vs. direct offer), or content (leading with your business name vs. leading with what you can do). If you change everything at once, you won’t know what moved the needle.

  • Wait for enough data before drawing conclusions
Aim for at least 100 calls per greeting before comparing results. Strong trends across multiple metrics can justify acting sooner; smaller differences between similar greetings may require more data.

  • Run it as a continuous process
Once you identify a winning greeting, disable the underperformers, introduce fresh variations, and keep testing. Guest expectations evolve. So should your greeting.

What to put in your welcome messages

Here are three directions worth testing:

  • Warm and conversational: “Hi, thanks for calling [Business Name]! I’m an AI assistant and I’m here to help — what can I do for you today?”
  • Direct and efficient: “You’ve reached [Business Name]. I can answer questions about our tours and send you a booking link — what would you like to know?”
  • Offer-led: “Hi! Thanks for calling [Business Name]. I can answer your questions or send a booking link straight to your phone. What brings you to us today?”

Your call data will tell you what works for your specific guests.

Frequently asked questions

What are custom welcome messages in Yonder?

Custom welcome messages are multiple AI voice greetings configured in your Yonder Voice Agent settings. When a call comes in, Yonder randomly selects one of your enabled greetings and tracks engagement metrics for each so you can compare performance over time.

Can I edit a welcome message after creating it?

No — welcome messages cannot be edited once created. Yonder’s reporting ties performance data to the exact wording of each message. To adjust a greeting, delete it and create a new one.

How many welcome messages should I create?

Three to four welcome messages is the recommended starting point. Too few limits comparison data; too many means it takes longer to accumulate enough calls per message for reliable results.

How long should I run the test before acting on results?

Aim for at least 100 calls per greeting before drawing conclusions. Strong trends across multiple metrics can justify acting sooner; smaller differences between similar greetings may require more data.

Where do I find the welcome message performance data?

Once you have more than one welcome message configured, a new tab appears on the Reports page in your Yonder dashboard showing engagement metrics for each greeting.
